Established in 1947, the Youth of the Year Award at Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston recognizes Club members who have shown superior leadership, academic achievement, and service to their respective club community. The annual program builds personal growth and leadership qualities among our young members.
Get to know George, Gerald and Darlene Jordan Club member and 2020 Club Youth of the Year:
George became a Club member at the age of ten. In retrospect, he acknowledges his initial timidity caused him to refrain from participating in other Club activities. After some convincing from staff, he gradually found himself exploring all the Club had to offer. Throughout his Club experience, George continued to grow, and by the time he entered the Teen Center, he became a mentor to other members.
His Club journey led him to discover his love of music, his passion for volunteerism, and a newfound interest in swimming. George became a band member and performed at the annual Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston’s Music Awards. His hard work in the Aquatics Program earned him the Devil Ray title which is the program’s highest ranking, and his participation in the Keystone Club broadened his vision of community and volunteer work.

His Club experience combined with the love, care, and support from his family are the reasons why he wants to continue paying it forward through volunteerism. He is a member of a community group that assembles winter care packages for the homeless, and teachers at Chelsea High School describe him as a role model to other students. George participates in his school’s Drama Department where he is a leader who is called upon to help his fellow students. After graduation, George hopes to pursue a degree in Computer Science at Wentworth Institute of Technology. He will be the first of seven siblings to attend college.
