At Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, we celebrate Black History Month as a tangible opportunity for us as an organization to fully embody the values we stand on. At our core, we are an organization committed to equity, putting our members first, and celebrating the fullness of the communities we serve. When we offer our youth a safe place to ask questions, learn from each other, and be unapologetically themselves, we give them the tools to understand the past and utilize those lessons to shape our future.
While Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) chose February as the month to celebrate Black History, the commitment to uplifting our communities’ stories spans the entire year. Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston is uniquely positioned to be difference-makers in the lives of our communities we serve, including those that are historically excluded. We aim to center equity in everything we do, ensuring that our members’ needs are met while enriching each day with relevant and ever-evolving programming.
This Black History Month and throughout the year, our staff remain committed to serving our youth in every facet of their lives, from offering swimming and music lessons to financial literacy classes to dependable mentorship and support. The intentionality of our programming and the grounding in our community allows us to create transformational opportunities for our members in Boston and Chelsea.
When this month comes to an end, our staff will continue to make lasting generational change and promote self-love and acceptance within our members, as we have for nearly 130 years.
