Rashawn, 11th Grader Boston Green Academy

Fun Fact: I was born the same day as Thomas Jefferson.

I am excited to express all the reasons I want to go to India and why having this program at the Yawkey Club for teens is important. I think for me, as an inner city kid, it would be great for me to experience a different lifestyle beyond the one I know. I want to go to India to see how it is different from America and the way I live. For instance, I watched a video on YouTube saying that in India they don’t use beef at McDonald’s because cows are considered sacred. Things like that interest me a lot and I want to learn more. Another reason why I want to go is to learn new things. For example, I’d love to learn some Hindi phrases. Ultimately, going to India would push me out of my comfort zone because I have never been outside the United States. Now that I am mature, I will be more appreciative of this opportunity and experience.

I think it’s important for Yawkey Club of Roxbury teens to have a chance to go to India because it will build character and teach us to venture off to new places and experience diversity. Reading about another culture is great, but being able to experience India with my own two eyes will be amazing. This opportunity will also give me an interesting experience to put on my resume and talk about with other people.
