On Monday morning I woke up very refreshed from my sleep . Soon after that I walked to breakfast that took place outside on a deck overlooking the Arabian Sea in a section of the city called Fort Kochi. The view was perfect . I could hear the birds chirping and the warm air starting to become hotter by the minute. The day’s temperatures would be over 90 degrees.
When we boarded the bus to travel to the boat dock, the ride seemed longer than it actually was because the roads were narrow and winding. I looked out the window and just stared at the palm trees, noticing the different birds and realizing how different southern India was compared to the north. I was almost in shock, seeing that the roofs of the houses looked a lot like the houses in Florida and the swamps reminded me of the geography of Louisiana . When we got to our destination, Nimo , Adonis and I rode the smallest tut tuts ever along a very tight and curving road.
Finally arriving at the boat dock I was able to get a good look at where I’d be spending the next 24 hours. The water was dark green and had things floating in it and there were loads of bugs flying all over the premises. However, as we boarded the boats , I realized that this wouldn’t be so bad and the boats were quite luxurious. We had lunch after the boat started moving which consisted of spicy grilled fish, white rice and veggies . After lunch I went to my room and reflected on the whole trip which led to me thinking about my family and how grateful I am to have the things that I do in my life and how wonderful this trip has been for me.
Skipping to after dinner time, all of the teens got on the largest boat and we listened to music. Later we had a lip sync battle which was extremely fun. Then we practiced our dance that we will be performing for the kids at Don Bosco. Overall my experience on the boat was great . I’m glad that I was able to bond with my roommate, Aminata, and the group as a whole in many different ways and I would love to stay on the houseboats again .
