Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB) is one of the few affordable youth development organizations able to provide not only an expansive scope of impressive programs and services, but also a deeply skilled and talented youth development staff. To set BGCB apart further, we are fortunate enough to count a registered nurse among our full-time staff. Thanks to a generous grant from Massachusetts General Hospital, Tricia McCarthy joined our team in 2015 to serve as BGCB’s Community Health Registered Nurse.
While she performs duties one might expect from a nurse, like providing direct care to members, supervising our summer camp nurse team, serving as a medical resource for staff, and communicating with parents and schools to ensure members with medical conditions are properly cared for at our Clubs, her contribution far exceeds these duties.
Nurse T, as she’s affectionately known at Clubs, is the epitome of compassion, generosity and team spirit. She consistently makes an effort to lend support any way she can. She’s quick to find the member who may need extra attention and guidance, she demonstrates concern for her colleagues’ wellbeing by gently asking if she can be helpful, and she’s eager to bring more resources to the Clubs, always seeking opportunities to make introductions or network on behalf of BGCB.
Finding a nurse to fill this unique role was exceedingly challenging. We needed to find the perfect blend of skill, experience, flexibility, and love of fun and children from all backgrounds. It’s not often the ideal candidate for a role like this exists, let alone applies. BGCB added to its list of greatest assets when we found and hired Nurse T. And during National Nurses Week, it is our privilege and honor to celebrate her.
