This year we’re asking supporters to share their passion and reason for involvement with the Artemis Circle and Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston. We hope these stories will inspire you as much as they do us. Read on to hear why Katie Willoughby, a weekly Club volunteer and member of our Leadership Committee, stays involved:
“One of my most special experiences with BGCB was attending my first assembly. It took place at the Club on my usual volunteer day, and you could feel the excitement in the room as the children gathered together. As staff members quieted the kids and took charge, I was amazed to witness first-hand how diligently and respectfully the kids listened. The sense of community was palpable as the staff talked about rules and upcoming events; this was followed by smiles and laughter as the kids participated in the program activity. Later that afternoon the staff announced the “Member of the Month” recognizing the child who most exemplifies the best traits of a BGCB member. I could tell it was an important moment as the kids cheered and hugged the winner who was smiling with great pride. I thought to myself, “what a great place to be – somewhere that teaches responsibility, creates a sense of community, instills confidence and provides fun in a child’s life.””

Katie recently moved to Boston after living in Alaska. She jumped right into the BGCB family by volunteering weekly in the gym at our Charlestown Club. She joined the Artemis Leadership Committee in 2016 and she and her husband, Jay, continue to be active supporters of BGCB.
