Welcome to post #63 of Club at Home! Every day, we share content that brings Club programs, traditions, and staff into the homes of members. Our goal is to provide the same fun and educational activities to our Club members and families, even while Clubs are physically closed.

Today, we check in with staff from our Clubs who share different activities for members across all age groups, including Juneteenth storytime, paper tissue flowers, a gaming livestream, and Spanish Jeopardy.

Today is Juneteenth! On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that the Civil War was over and all slaves had been declared free. Typically, communities celebrate Juneteenth with a parade or block party, and families gather to share a meal together. This year, there are rallies happening all over the country to continue advocating for racial equity.

Watch the video below a special story time reading of “Juneteenth for Mazie,” by Floyd Cooper, to learn about the history of the holiday and how it is celebrated. And check out this article from the City of Boston’s Resilience and Racial Equity department for a deeper dive into Juneteenth’s origins.
