Welcome to post #14 of Club at Home! Every day, we share content that brings Club programs, traditions, and staff into the homes of members. Our goal is to provide the same fun and educational activities to our Club members and families, even while Clubs are physically closed.

Even though vegetable gardens at Clubs won’t be growing yet, you can still grow your own garden at home with items you may already have in your kitchen. To sign up for a free account on MyFuture:
– Go to MyFuture.net
– Click “Sign Up”
– Fill in your personal info (name, birth date, gender, state)
– When it asks for “City,” scroll through and select your Club’s NEIGHBORHOOD (e.g. search for “Charlestown,” Roxbury,” “Jamaica Plain,” etc. – the Boston neighborhood where your Club is located. The Gerald and Darlene Jordan Club will be listed under “Chelsea”)
– Wait until you receive confirmation of your account (we will make sure this is quick!)

Question:
James and Karina are planning to move. Their last moving box is 3 feet wide and 4 feet long. The last item they have to pack is Josh’s fishing poles which is 4.5 feet long. Will the fishing pole fit in the box? What is the maximum length of an object that will fit in the box?
Solution:
The fishing pole will fit in the box if it is turned diagonally. The maximum length of an object that can still fit in the box is 5 feet.
The answer to this is based on a geometric principle called the Pythagorean Theorem that applies to triangles. The box which is in the shape of a rectangle (3×4) can actually be separated into two equal triangles if it is divided the long way.
The Pythagorean Theorem states that for any right triangle (a triangle with a 90-degree angle), the dimensions of the triangle have to fit the formula a2 + b2 = c2 .
