Established in 1947, the Youth of the Year Award at Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston recognizes Club members who have shown superior leadership, academic achievement, and service to their respective club community. The annual program builds personal growth and leadership qualities among our young members.

Get to know Janae, Yawkey Club of Roxbury member and 2020 Club Youth of the Year:

Janae’s first introduction to the club was at the age of six, when she joined The Manny Wilson Basketball Program at the Yawkey Club of Roxbury. Through this program, she established her closest friendships and learned the importance of teamwork. Janae attributes her personal growth to her life at the club, from the mentors she found in Club staff to the many programs she participated in.

The Explore India Experiential Travel Program exposed her to the challenges young people face, especially in regard to accessing a quality education. The India trip became an impactful learning experience for her and gave her the push she needed to follow her passion of becoming a neonatal nurse. Being a member of Keystone instilled in her the importance of community service and paying it forward. She is determined to continue advocating for education for all and eliminating the educational disparities between different communities.

Janae’s leadership extends beyond the club; Club staff and her teachers describe her as a passionate and thoughtful student. She has excelled as a student in the Child Development Program at Arlington High School, where she’s cared for younger children with love and kindness. In addition, she is an active member of Morning Star Baptist Church where she volunteers with the youth and sings in the choir.

Janae’s commitment, dedication, and passion for others will guide her through the next phase of her journey to becoming a neonatal nurse, advocating for the issues that matter most to her, and continuing to lift up others through mentorship. She will continue her education next year at Norfolk State University.
