Established in 1947, the Youth of the Year Award at Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB) recognizes Club members who have shown superior leadership, academic achievement, and service to their respective Club community. The annual program builds personal growth and leadership qualities among our young members.
Get to know Avaughn, Mattapan Teen Center member and 2021 Club Youth of the Year:
Avaughn is an inspirational member who believes that being a part of the Club means bringing your best and always being ready to try something new. His participation from day one is a testament to that belief, with his Club experience including countless programs from financial literacy to Keystone President. Whether it be Club, community, or school events, you can always count on Avaughn to give his time and solid work ethic. He has volunteered at Mattapan Community Clean-Ups, Special Olympics, Mattapan Block Party, and movie nights.
Avaughn is also a valued member of his school community, where he earned a spot on the varsity football team his freshman year. In the face of adversity, Avaughn continues to move forward and advocate for change for the betterment of his family, Club, and community. This fall, Avaughn will attend UMass Boston and study to become an electrical engineer.
