Established in 1947, the Youth of the Year Award at Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston recognizes Club members who have shown superior leadership, academic achievement, and service to their respective Club community. The annual program builds personal growth and leadership qualities among our young members.
Get to know Brendan, Edgerley Family South Boston Club member and 2021 Club Youth of the Year:
Brendan walked through the Edgerly Family South Boston Club’s doors as a shy seven-year-old who would complete his homework in the Education Room and then go home. Quickly, he made a connection with a peer and credits this friendship with discovering what the Club had to offer. Soon enough, Brendan felt more engaged and ready to participate in more activities such as Dungeons and Dragons and Torch Club and was hired as a Lifeguard. Throughout his Club experience, Brendan began to build confidence, connect with Club staff, and advocate for his community. He is described by others as a positive, strong leader whose passion for service helped to raise more than $2,000 for Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Brendan was equally as involved in school where he served as Student Council President. He pushed for change that will continue to make a positive impact long after he has graduated. In addition to Student Council, Brendan was a member of his school’s Cross Country team. His school and Club experience broadened his vision of community and the importance of helping others. Brendan will be attending Bunker Hill Community College and studying to become an electrician.
