“I want to be able to give back to people and help diversify a field that does not have that much diversity. Statistically speaking, there are not many Black males that are therapists. I believe that this is harmful because it helps perpetuate the stereotype against therapy and mental health in Black communities.”

Driven by Purpose: The Motivation Behind Cisco's Career Goals

Cisco F. is an inspiring member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston’s Josh Kraft Mattapan Teen Center. As a rising freshman at UMASS Boston, Cisco is set to study psychology with aspirations of becoming a psychiatrist or therapist. His goal is to make a significant impact, particularly within his community, by breaking barriers and fostering a more inclusive mental health landscape.

Cisco’s ambition to pursue a career in mental health is fueled by a deep-seated desire to address the disparities he observes in his community.

“I want to be able to help give back to people,” Cisco explains, recognizing the discomfort many individuals feel when discussing mental health and the challenges of receiving proper diagnoses in underserved neighborhoods.

Cisco’s awareness of the lack of Black male representation in mental health professions drives his commitment to change. He believes that increasing diversity in these fields can combat harmful stereotypes and encourage more open discussions about mental health within the Black community.

Transformative Influence: How the Club Shaped Cisco's Views

Cisco attributes much of his growth and newfound perspective on mental health to his time at Josh Kraft Mattapan Teen Center. “Before going to the Teen Center, I would have never considered being able to give back or help people in any way with my own actions. The Teen Center taught me that it’s not a weakness to speak out when you feel any type of way,” Cisco reflects. The Club has instilled in him the importance of expressing emotions and navigating feelings constructively.

Ready To Work fellow Cisco F.

In addition to the Tufts program, Cisco is also a participant of Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston’s Ready to Work Pathways: Bridge to Healthcare Careers initiative. This program is designed to prepare teens for careers in the healthcare industry by providing them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and experiences. The program provides access to internships, training/certifications, pre-college experiences, and college readiness.

Cisco has gained practical experience and insights that will be crucial as he starts his college career and pursues his goal of becoming a psychiatrist or therapist.

This combination of academic preparation through the Tufts program and practical experience from the Ready to Work Pathways initiative equips Cisco with a solid foundation as he steps into the healthcare field. He is excited to apply what he has learned, continue expanding his knowledge, and ultimately make a significant impact in his community

Words of Wisdom: Cisco's Advice for Aspiring Youth

Cisco’s journey is a testament to the power of stepping out of one’s comfort zone. “If you are not willing to take the risks, you will be left behind,” he advises other young people to embrace new experiences and challenges. The Boys & Girls Clubs have taught him that taking risks and being open to new opportunities can lead to personal growth and success. Cisco’s story is a beacon of inspiration, encouraging others to pursue their passions fearlessly and make meaningful contributions to their communities.

Cisco F.’s story is a shining example of how Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, particularly the Josh Kraft Mattapan Teen Center, nurture the potential of young individuals. By providing a supportive environment and opportunities for growth, the club helps members like Cisco realize their dreams and become agents of change in their communities. As Cisco prepares to enter college and pursue his career in mental health, his journey reminds us of all of the importance of diversity, empathy, and the courage to break down barriers.
