At Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, we believe every young person has the potential for greatness. That’s why we’re excited to introduce CareerLabs, a bold, next-step initiative designed to support BGCB alumni ages 18–24 as they launch into adulthood. This signature program offers tailored tools, mentorship, and real-world experiences to help them build meaningful, sustainable careers.

CareerLabs builds on the foundation of our proven Ready to Work program, which prepares teens for their first job experiences. Now, we’re extending that support further—empowering alumni to navigate the complex transition from high school to career with confidence, resilience, and a plan for long-term success.

“We’ve always known that the journey doesn’t end when our members turn 18. Once a Club kid, always a Club kid.” – Dana Smith, Director of CareerLabs

Why CareerLabs?

Too many young adults in Boston and Chelsea face steep barriers to stable employment. According to the 2024 MIT Living Wage Calculator, 31% are underemployed, not earning a living wage, or disconnected from the workforce.

At the same time, Massachusetts employers are navigating critical labor shortages and actively seeking diverse, motivated talent. CareerLabs bridges this divide—equipping BGCB alumni with the skills, networks, and insights needed to thrive in today’s workforce.

But this is more than job readiness. CareerLabs is a learner-led, asset-based coaching model that builds confidence, strengthens decision-making, and helps participants find clarity in their career direction. Through a five-step journey—self-reflection, exploration, planning, mentorship, and peer support—alumni gain not just employment, but a career path aligned with their strengths and ambitions.

CareerLabs in Action

CareerLabs provides a comprehensive support system designed to help young adults navigate the early stages of their professional journey with confidence:

  • Personalized coaching that connects young adults to relevant resources, mentors, and opportunities
  • Small group peer support that provides motivation, accountability, and networking
  • Skill development focused on critical thinking, resilience, communication, and teamwork
  • Real-world projects that allow participants to explore different industries and career paths
  • Direct connections to professionals for informational interviews, job shadows, and mentorship

Since launching, CareerLabs participants have built confidence, clarified career goals, expanded professional networks, and secured meaningful employment. They’re not just landing jobs—they’re developing the tools and mindset for long-term success, increased earning potential, and overall well-being.

CareerLabs isn’t just about work—it’s about purpose. It’s about discovering your unique strengths and building a future, community, and career around them.

CareerLabs sessions take place at Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston’s downtown location: 200 High Street

There’s a role for everyone to play:
