Jennifer Medina is the Teen Director at BGCB’s Yawkey Club of Roxbury.
Tell us a little about your background and what brought you to BGCB.
After graduating college, as a Communications and Media major, I interned at El Mundo Newspaper. Through their partnership with the Red Sox, one of my projects was to work with high school students and acknowledge them for their academic achievements. They had the chance to meet a few players and get presented in front of hundreds of people while their families stood beside them. Something about their happiness and excitement made me want to work with youth. Even though I was working in my major field, I knew I wanted to build on working with youth even more!
One day, I was browsing the internet and saw a position available for Teen Advocate at BGCB’s Yawkey Club. As a Club alum of Boys & Girls Club of Nashua, I was familiar with the Club and the environment. I applied, waited for a bit, thought I didn’t get it and it finally happened!
What is your favorite part of your job?
There are many favorite parts of my job. My coworkers, the members, the programs, the memories you build, and more. If I had to highlight one favorite part, it would be knowing that I am a part of someone’s growth and knowing that I have made an impact.
What do you like about being employed by BGCB?
I appreciate the opportunity to grow professionally. There are training opportunities that have helped me in my current position and will help me in any further endeavors.
What are you looking forward to this year, and what are some of your favorite parts of your job?
I’m looking forward to seeing our members grow, specifically the teens I work with. My favorite part is seeing how they evolve and their ability to act on their potential. Hanging out in the Teen Center, hosting an event with Keystone, painting with the teens, talking about the “new hip thing,” or playing a game of Heads Up are a few favorite parts of my day-to-day.
How do you describe your job to friends and family?
When I describe my job or what the Club is about, I always use the word opportunity. The teens have the opportunity to become global citizens through our travel program, we promote college readiness and career preparation, provide a safe and fun space for them to chill, and we just give these kids the resources and tools for life at and after the Club. I’d probably throw in “Yeah it’s a pretty cool thing to be a part of…Knowing you helped someone get to college or discover their ability to sing, etc, it’s great.”
How has your role at BGCB evolved?
I began my role at BGCB as a Teen Advocate. I observed and learned a lot in that role and I believe it gave me the confidence and the proper skills to apply for Teen Director opportunity, which I currently am today. I also serve as Yawkey’s Volunteer Coordinator. I have also been recently given the chance to professionally grow as a Program Leader.
