Over the past 10 years, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programs have become a fixture in week-to-week programming across Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston’s network. With a robust list of partners, including Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Museum of Science, New England Aquarium, Best Buy, Northeastern University, The Clubhouse Network, Green City Growers, Girls Who Code, and Health Resources in Action’s The LEAH Project, members of all ages are getting access quality education about STEM topics on a consistent basis.
“We are grateful to be located in one of the STEM hubs of the world and have an extensive list of partners across myriad sectors who are actively involved at Clubs,” explained Kaiti Jones, Director of Program & Partner Initiatives. “These partners round out our comprehensive curriculum by sharing expertise in this vital field.”
Weekly Programs
Members at many locations have weekly access to STEM programs run by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Museum of Science. Programming run by MGH is broken into three groups based on age: Junior STEM (Grades 3-5), Senior STEM (Grades 6-8), MGH Youth Scholars (teens). Material covered ranges across a wide range of topics from the science of energy to natural disasters. Programming run by Museum of Science is open to all ages and caters specifically to members with an interest in engineering.
Cyber Summit
BGCB’s annual Cyber Summit is a two-day technology extravaganza run in partnership with Best Buy’s Geek Squad Academy. Over the course of 48 hours, Club members have the opportunity to attend workshops that focus on all kinds of tech, from robotics to coding to photography.
Learning to Teach
The LEAH Project is a teen workforce initiative by Health Resources in Action, whose mission is to cultivate the power of youth to transform lives and communities through science, education, and service. Teen LEAH Mentors work with young members by leading STEM activities, and ultimately serving as mentors and positive role models.
